Battery structure characteristics

On the left side of the lithium iron phosphate battery is the anode made of olivine LiFePO4 material, which is connected with the battery anode by aluminum foil. On the right is the negative electrode of the battery composed of carbon (graphite), which is connected with the negative electrode of the battery by copper foil. In the middle is a polymer diaphragm, which separates the positive electrode from the negative electrode. Lithium ions can pass through the diaphragm, but electrons cannot. The battery is filled with electrolyte and sealed by metal shell.

Battery charging and discharging principle

The charge-discharge reaction of lithium iron phosphate battery is between LiFePO4 and FePO4. During the charging process, LiFePO4 gradually separates from lithium ion to form FePO4. During the discharge process, lithium ion is embedded into FePO4 to form LiFePO4.

When the battery is charged, lithium ions migrate from the lithium iron phosphate crystal to the surface of the crystal, enter the electrolyte under the action of the electric field force, pass through the diaphragm, and then migrate to the surface of the graphite crystal through the electrolyte, and then embed in the graphite lattice.

At the same time, the electrons flow to the aluminum foil collector of the positive electrode through the conductor, to the copper foil collector of the negative electrode of the battery through the lug, the positive pole of the battery, the external circuit, the negative pole, and the negative pole lug, and then to the graphite negative electrode through the conductor, so that the charge of the negative electrode is balanced. After lithium ion is removed from lithium iron phosphate, lithium iron phosphate is converted into iron phosphate.

When the battery is discharged, the lithium ion is removed from the graphite crystal, enters the electrolyte, passes through the diaphragm, migrates to the surface of the lithium iron phosphate crystal through the electrolyte, and then re-inserts into the lattice of the lithium iron phosphate crystal.

At the same time, the electrons flow through the conductor to the copper foil collector of the negative electrode, through the lug, the negative pole of the battery, the external circuit, the positive pole, and the positive pole lug to the aluminum foil collector of the positive electrode of the battery, and then through the conductor to the lithium iron phosphate positive electrode, so that the charge of the positive electrode is balanced. After lithium ion is embedded into iron phosphate crystal, iron phosphate is converted into lithium iron phosphate.
