Why do lithium batteries need BMS? What is the function?
Lithium batteries are used more and more widely. No matter mobile phones, tablets, or even new energy vehicles are using lithium batteries. For lithium battery packs, they are all composed of multiple lithium batteries. Each battery pack has a battery management board, which is called the battery management system, or BMS for short.
Why do lithium batteries need BMS?
The main material of lithium battery is lithium metal. Lithium itself is a relatively active metal. Some people even jokingly claim that the lithium battery itself is an untimely bomb, which may explode if improperly operated. If a lithium battery does not have a BMS, overdischarge and overcharge may occur during use. Most problems with lithium batteries are caused by these two phenomena. Users cannot tell when overdischarge/overcharge occurs when using lithium batteries or charging, so BMS is very important.
Role of battery management system BMS
The BMS can monitor the entire battery pack, such as detecting whether the temperature of the lithium battery is too high, whether there is a large pressure difference between a single battery and other batteries, and can give an alarm to remind people to repair and maintain the battery. When the power of the lithium battery is low to a certain degree during the discharge process, it can remind people to charge and cut off the current output to prevent over discharge; During charging, the charging current can be adjusted according to the real-time electricity quantity, and the charging can be stopped when the battery is fully charged, thus causing overcharge. So as to improve the safety and service life of the lithium battery pack as much as possible.
